Noodles and rock and roll.

Noodles and Rock and Roll | Tash Spong

All the noodles form a line under the flags! Do the rock and roll! Where am I – International Noodle day? Guess again. A rockabilly swing night? No, but that sounds fun; maybe next time. This week I’m feeling the burn at an aqua aerobics class. [Read more...]

Sherbet Birdie.

Sherbet Birdie | Black Dove Magazine

by Claire Louise Leonard.
Sitting with Sasha Dobies, founder and Photographer of Sherbet Birdie, is a pretty special moment. An inspiring woman, making a change for the women of Brisbane, she is a lady you would love as one as your closest friends. We sat down for a chat over cups of tea, surrounded by treats and cupcakes in the boudoir-style Teneriffe Studio. [Read more...]

This is my Voice | Shane Koyczan

Shane Koyczan | This is my Voice

We are fascinated with this man. Shane Koyczan is a Canadian Poet and Writer that Lindsey happened to catch at the Brisbane Writer’s Festival last year. He has been called “the poet of our generation”, which we think is a pretty spot on statement. [Read more...]

The lessons from holidays.

The Lessons From Holidays | Black Dove Magazine

By Holly Carson.

I’ve never really been one to make New Year’s resolutions, but I came to a point where I felt that my entire life was being consumed by my business. I knew something had to change when I realised that I hadn’t given myself a holiday for nearly ten years. I was constantly run down and sick, I felt anxious whenever I was away from the salon and I said no to more social events than I said yes. [Read more...]

Movember

David Nankervis | Movember

by David Nankervis.

Movember used to be something my friends and I did as a bit of a joke. We’d shave on the first of November and see who could get the dirtiest looking Mo by the end of the month, or in some cases see who could last without external factors (girlfriends) forcing us to shave. What started out as a bit of blokey fun has now become an international campaign to bring awareness, shining a light on three things: Firstly, men are not as tough as we outwardly portray. Secondly, the greatest fears among men are doctors and regular checkups. Thirdly, cancer does not just affect the female body part men think about most. According to http://au.movember.com, “On average men die five to six years younger than women. The suicide rate is four times higher for men than women, and more than five men die prematurely each hour from potentially preventable illnesses.” [Read more...]

Jam Jar Slam

Jam Jar | Black Dove Magazine

by Betsy Turcot.

There’s a new poetry gig in town. This month is dedicated to the Jam Slam at Jam Jar, one of West End’s hippest new spaces. Entering Jam Jar is a bit like stepping into Alice’s rabbit hole. The front is unassuming. There’s a bar and a piano, but if you walk past this and down the little hall by the kitchen, you stumble on a graffiti-walled, underground cultural haven. We made our way through the repurposed tables to a shared table at the back where our table-mates were happily drawing on the colored scrap paper with the supplied markers. [Read more...]

Just breathe

Just Breathe | Black Dove Magazine

by Tash Spong.

Grace and I had a little falling out. We were getting on just grand until I miscalculated the effect rain would have on my boots and took a little tumble down some stairs. Not my most graceful hour. Fear not – I’m on the mend; however, I may have to wait to give aerial yoga a whirl.

So after a particularly hectic few weeks, I’ve decided my mind and soul need some nurturing while I wait for my body to tell me it’s ready to rock again. The Deep Peace Meditation class at the Australian School of Yoga and Meditation (ASMY) in West End caught my eye. Ancient yoga practices that will help over stress and anxieties, help relieve tension and calm the mind? Yes please. [Read more...]

It’s Slam Dunk. For Poetry.

Betsy Turcot | Black Dove Magazine

by Betsy Turcot.

In light of the recent poetic gathering I attended in Canberra, the First National Slam Poetry Symposium, I thought I would tackle the mire of Slam Poetry in this month’s issue. So, what is Slam Poetry, do you say? Oh, you think it’s free-styling hip hop? NO. But I can see why you would say that. [Read more...]

Mirror, Mirror on the wall.

Mirror, Mirror. | Black Dove Magazine

by Natasha Spong

Graceful is not a word I would use to describe myself. And yet I was being instructed to embrace my inner beauty and grace while doing ‘gallops’. Beauty I can begrudgingly acknowledge for some of my features. But grace? Never met her, and we’ve certainly never been on embracing terms.

So, gallops. No, I wasn’t riding a horse called Grace – I was at my first beginners’ ballet class. After working at Queensland Ballet for nearly a year, I thought it was about time I stepped up to the barre and gave it a shot. Our dancers make it look so effortless, as if they’re floating across the surface. How hard could it be? [Read more...]
