Strong and Winning

F.I.T Cardio Series | Black Dove Magazine

by Lindsey T. H. Jackson.

This November I am feeling strong. It has been a year of learning and now as we begin the fun-filled descent into holiday festivity I feel as if I have battled and conquered in 2011. My husband, Dayle, always asks me upon arriving home, “did you win today, Babe?” And for some reason, right now, I feel like roaring at the top of my lungs, “Yes, damn it, I won! I kicked today’s A##! ” [Read more...]

Releasing Limitations

Releasing Limitations | Black Dove Magazine

by Lindsey T.H. Jackson

What I love about working with the body is that the exploration is never done. I learn new things every day about my posture, alignment, strength, limitations, and there is still more to be discovered.

That is also what I loved about being a dancer. In dance there are endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. Dance is a philosophy of freedom, and it taught me that you are only bound by the limitations you create in your mind. [Read more...]

Sugar: Friend or Foe?

Sugar: Friend or Foe? | Black Dove Magazine

by Tina Taylor

Sugar. It takes me back to a song by The Archies, it goes something like: ‘Sugar sugar….di dit dit di dit di….ah honey honey…… di dit dit di dit di….you are my candy girl…’ Such a sweet song, excuse the pun! But it poses a good question, sugar or honey? We’ll get into that later.

So, sugar, is it friend or foe? Well, let’s look at why some sugar is important, what forms sugar comes in and what the evidence says about sugar. [Read more...]

“Letting Go.” – F.I.T Stretch Series

Letting Go | Black Dove Magazine

by Lindsey T. H. Jackson

Something is going on in the world. Natural disasters, economic decline, death, unrest – for some reason this year has seemed harder than others. Many times I looked up and asked the Universe ‘what are we meant to be learning’, ‘what is the lesson in the powerlessness I feel’? And the answer that finally came to me, no matter how cliché, was to give in.
Below you will find a stretch series that helped me and some of my clients practice the act of accepting or giving in. I always cue in class that you must, ‘give-in to the stretch’. The more you try to fight the stretch the less improvement you will see. And although you may experience what feels like pain when you initially let go, it is the beginning of relaxing into the real stretch, or growth. [Read more...]

Preparing For a Baby: 20 Considerations

Preparing for a Baby

The birth of a baby can be one of the most intense transitions we make in life.   This event marks not only the birth of a new life but also the birth of a mother and father. It is a time when the expecting parents are vulnerable to outside influences and opinions that can be confusing for them.

In our society, there is a lack of handed down knowledge, so many new parents enter their birth and parenting preparation without a clear pathway or understanding of how they can best prepare for this transition. From my own experience of birthing my own seven children and from listening to women and their partners for the last 15 years, I would like to offer what I feel is essential understandings to consider as you prepare for the birth of a baby.

Getting the Right Support

Getting the Right Support

by Adriana Solarzano

At the end of the day, the only person who can make a change to your health and fitness is YOU. It doesn’t matter if you have the best trainer in the world, if you have access to the latest fitness gadgets, or have meals delivered to your door – the buck stops with you.

With that said, one major influence to your on- going health and fitness is the support that you receive from your close friends and family. From my own experience, clients who receive 100% support from their partner are the ones who make the greatest improvements and maintain their new found healthy lifestyle.
